Loan Criteria

Companies applying for funds under this loan program must meet the following criteria:

  • Company must be selling products or services in Montana and it is preferred that sales outside of Montana have been demonstrated (and thus bringing net new money into the state). Use of funds must be targeted at generating revenue from out-of-state clients, customers, or businesses.
  • Company must show revenue from its primary line of business in the past year. Bootstrap Montana loan funds are not available to new start-ups.
  • Company must be incorporated as either a C-Corporation, S-Corporation, or Limited Liability Corporation.
  • Company must be headquartered in Montana with more than 50% of its employees located within Montana.
  • Company must provide a letter of recommendation from someone in the local community preferably the company's banker, legal counsel, or CPA.
  • 51% of the ownership of the company must be in the hands of legal US citizens.
  • Applicant must be a Senior Company Official, be at least 18 years of age, and have been a resident of Montana for the past 3 years.
  • Company or Applicant must not have a history of bankruptcy.

Loan Terms

Loans will be made in amounts ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 (all currency in US Dollars). The loan committee meets as required. Applications are always accepted.

General Terms:

  1. One-year loan at 0% Interest.
  2. It is expected the loan will be paid off in one year.
  3. If the loan is not paid back in one year, the company will make quarterly payments beginning on the 1st anniversary of the loan agreement in equal installments based on the outstanding loan balance at the time of the one-year anniversary of the loan agreement.
  4. Companies awarded loan funds will be required to provide quarterly reports while the loan is outstanding in the form of unaudited financials. A short narrative on how funds have been used to date, including the associated results, will be included in the reports.
